Buddhist Master Hsing Yun recalls his experiences during Nanjing Massacre
(Abstract) Master Hsing Yun, a Taiwan-based Buddhist monk and founder of the Fo Gaung Shan Buddhist order, recalled his personal experiences during the Nanjing Massacre. He was ten year old when the atrocities took place. Accompanying with his mother, he saw numerous bleeding corpses along their way of searching for his father who was lost in the war. During the occupation, he said, the best way to hide away from the invaders was to sleep among the death bodies.
Some twenty years ago in Los Angles, a conversation between Master Hsing Yun and a Chinese-American painter Li Zijian inspired the artist to create the oil paining “Nanjing Massacre” that best expresses the feelings of the victims and the survivors. The painting has been shown in more than 30 countries throughout the world.
