Context

BC ALPHA and Richmond Secondary School jointly organized a student symposium on Human Rights in the Asia-Pacific (1931-1945) on April 5, 2019 and 450 students of Social Studies 10 to 12 participated in this four hours event. Speakers included: Dr. John Price, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Victoria, Mr. Marius van Nooteen, survivor of Japanese concentration camps in Indonesia during WWII, Mr. Paul Johnson, producer of the documentary “Unit 731 -How America Exploited Japan’s Biological Weapons Crimes”,  and Ms. Satoko Norimatsu, founder of the Peace Philosophy Centre in Vancouver. Besides, students of the school also presented a mock trial that simulates a war crime tribunal and all the participants were invited as the jury. Before closing, a Bell Tolling Ceremony was held in commemoration of the Asian Holocaust Victims (Abstracted and translated from the report of Dawa News, a Vancouver-based Chinese news media).
